Sexual function and dysfunction studies

Sexual dysfunction encompasses a range of conditions—including erectile dysfunction, low sexual desire, and difficulties with arousal or orgasm—that affect a substantial proportion of adults across the lifespan and are closely tied to psychological wellbeing, relationship quality, and overall health. Research in this area examines how biological factors such as cardiovascular disease, hormonal changes during menopause, and androgen levels intersect with psychological states like depression and anxiety to produce or worsen these conditions. Large-scale epidemiological efforts, such as the Global Study of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors, have revealed that prevalence and experience of sexual dysfunction vary considerably across cultures, age groups, and sexes, challenging assumptions that these problems are rare or inevitable. Open questions center on how best to combine pharmacological approaches—like androgen therapy—with psychological interventions, and on clarifying the mechanisms linking vascular and endothelial health to sexual function in both men and women.
