Higher Education Research Studies

Higher education research examines how students move through college and university systems, asking why some thrive academically while others disengage or leave before completing a degree. Particular attention goes to students who are the first in their families to attend college, a population that often enters with fewer institutional resources and social networks than their peers, making the transition to academic life steeper and attrition more likely. Researchers are actively working to understand how campus environments, financial aid structures, and peer relationships either reinforce or reduce inequalities in who ultimately graduates. Central open questions include how institutions can design support systems that reach students before they struggle, and whether gains in access to higher education are translating into genuine gains in long-term outcomes across socioeconomic and demographic lines.
