Educational theories and practices
Qualitative research in education examines how people learn, teach, and make meaning within classrooms, institutions, and the broader social structures that shape them, drawing on interviews, ethnography, and interpretive analysis rather than numerical measurement alone. Because schooling is deeply entangled with culture, power, and identity, these methods allow researchers to surface the lived experiences that aggregate data tends to obscure. Globalization has sharpened several central questions in the area: how do pedagogical practices travel and transform across national contexts, and whose epistemological frameworks get treated as universal? Ongoing debates about rigor, positionality, and the relationship between researcher and participant continue to push the methodology itself forward alongside the substantive educational questions it investigates.
