Complementary and Alternative Medicine Studies

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research examines the safety, efficacy, and patterns of use of non-conventional health practices—most prominently herbal medicine—across general and clinical populations. The stakes are particularly high for cancer patients, who use CAM at elevated rates and face meaningful risks from drug interactions and adverse reactions that often go unreported or unrecognized by their conventional care teams. Tracking these harms requires dedicated safety monitoring frameworks and clearer regulatory standards, neither of which yet exists in a consistent form across most health systems. Researchers are actively working to characterize how CAM use is shifting globally, what drives patient decisions to use it alongside or instead of conventional treatment, and how clinical practice can better account for it.
