Big Data and Business Intelligence

Big data and business intelligence research examines how organizations collect, process, and interpret large volumes of operational and market data to make better decisions—spanning everything from forecasting demand in supply chains to identifying early warning signs of financial risk. The core interest is understanding when and why data-driven approaches actually improve firm performance, rather than assuming they automatically do. Researchers are actively working through questions about how to integrate analytics into existing decision support systems without overwhelming managers with noise, and how smaller or less data-mature firms can benefit from methods originally designed for tech giants. Sustainability and organizational transparency have emerged as newer concerns, pushing the field to consider not just whether big data optimizes outcomes, but which outcomes it should be optimizing for.
