Real estate and construction management
Architecture, when viewed through the lens of engineering and urban planning, examines how the built environment can be designed to meet human needs while responding to ecological and economic pressures at the scale of cities and regions. Researchers draw on spatial economics, data analysis, and environmental policy to understand how decisions about building form, energy systems, and land use ripple outward into neighborhood function and resource consumption. A central challenge is integrating renewable energy technologies and flood-adaptive structures—such as floating architecture—into urban fabric without displacing communities or concentrating benefits among wealthier populations. Open questions remain around how public engagement can meaningfully shape large-scale development decisions and how corporate governance in the construction sector can be aligned with long-term sustainability goals rather than short-term returns.
