Gynecological conditions and treatments

The uterus can develop with structural abnormalities—ranging from a partially divided cavity to complete duplication—or acquire them later through scarring, polyp growth, or adhesion formation following surgery or infection. These conditions, which include Müllerian duct anomalies present from embryonic development and acquired disorders such as Asherman syndrome, are a significant but often underdiagnosed cause of infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and obstetric complications. Hysteroscopy has become the central diagnostic and surgical tool for evaluating and correcting intrauterine pathology, yet researchers continue to debate which anomalies warrant intervention, how to predict who will benefit from surgery, and what reproductive outcomes patients can realistically expect afterward. Underlying much of this work is a deeper effort to understand the molecular and developmental genetics that govern formation of the female reproductive tract, which may eventually explain why some structural variations cause harm and others do not.
