Environmental Sustainability and Education

Environmental sustainability and education research examines how societies learn about, govern, and manage the natural systems they depend on — from freshwater supplies and biological diversity to energy sources and waste streams. It sits at the intersection of ecology, public policy, and social behavior, asking not only what sustainable practices look like in principle but how legal frameworks, institutional incentives, and community engagement can actually bring them about. A central open question is how to close the persistent gap between environmental knowledge and action, particularly across communities with unequal access to resources and political influence. Researchers are also working to understand how monitoring technologies and participatory governance can be combined to make environmental policy more adaptive and accountable at local, national, and global scales.
