Environmental Sustainability and Education

Environmental sustainability research examines how societies manage natural resources, govern ecosystems, and shape public behavior through law, policy, and education. At its core, the work asks how institutions can translate scientific knowledge about biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and energy systems into durable rules and genuine civic engagement rather than paper commitments. A central open question is how to design educational and regulatory frameworks that shift behavior at scale without deepening inequalities between communities with different economic means. Researchers are also actively investigating the role of social participation in making environmental policy more effective and legitimate, recognizing that technical solutions rarely succeed when they are handed down rather than developed with the people they affect.
