Artistic and Creative Research
Artistic and creative research treats the act of making—writing a poem, choreographing a performance, designing an object—as a legitimate form of inquiry, one that generates knowledge that conventional academic methods often cannot reach. Scholars and practitioners working here examine how creative processes produce insight, how that insight can be communicated and evaluated, and how institutions might recognize artistic practice as a valid research contribution on par with a laboratory experiment or archival study. Much of the current work circles around unresolved questions: what counts as evidence when the primary output is a screenplay or a dance, and how pedagogy should be structured when the goal is to teach students to think rigorously through making rather than simply about it. The field also grapples with whose experiential knowledge gets legitimized and how cultural context shapes what kinds of creative inquiry are taken seriously.
