Artistic and Creative Research

Artistic and creative research treats the act of making — writing a poem, staging a performance, designing an object — as a legitimate mode of inquiry, one that generates knowledge not easily captured through conventional academic methods. Scholars and practitioners working here examine how creative processes produce insight, how that insight can be communicated and evaluated within institutional contexts, and what it means to treat a screenplay or a choreographic work as both an outcome and an argument. A central tension driving current work is whether the knowledge embedded in artistic practice can be made legible to academic standards without losing what makes it distinctive. Researchers are also probing how pedagogy can transmit experiential and embodied ways of knowing, and how creative research methods travel across disciplines as diverse as screenwriting, poetry, and design.
