Cloud Computing and Resource Management

Cloud computing research examines how computing power, storage, and software can be delivered over networks from large shared facilities called data centers, and how those resources can be allocated efficiently among many simultaneous users and workloads. Frameworks like Hadoop and the MapReduce programming model emerged from the need to process datasets too large for any single machine, distributing computation across thousands of commodity servers working in parallel. Virtualization sits at the center of much of this work, allowing physical hardware to be carved into flexible, isolated environments that can be scaled up or down on demand. Active research questions include how to minimize the energy consumed by data centers without sacrificing performance, and how to schedule competing workloads fairly and predictably as systems grow to operate at planetary scale.
