Cloud computing research examines how computational work and storage can be distributed across networks of shared servers, and how the software systems managing those servers can allocate memory, processing power, and bandwidth efficiently under shifting demand. Frameworks like MapReduce and Hadoop emerged from the practical need to process datasets too large for any single machine, turning clusters of commodity hardware into coordinated processing pipelines. Data centers now consume a substantial and growing share of global electricity, so a central concern is how to schedule workloads in ways that reduce energy use without sacrificing performance or reliability. Researchers are actively working on how virtualization can make resource allocation more flexible and responsive, and on how distributed systems can maintain consistency and fault tolerance as they scale to millions of concurrent users.
