Advanced Steganography and Watermarking Techniques

Steganography and digital watermarking are concerned with hiding information inside digital images in ways that are either imperceptible to casual observation or robust enough to survive tampering, compression, and transmission. Where steganography prioritizes concealment — embedding a secret message so that its very existence goes unnoticed — watermarking typically prioritizes persistence, allowing ownership claims or authenticity proofs to be recovered even after an image has been cropped, filtered, or re-encoded. Reversible data embedding extends these ideas further by requiring that the cover image be perfectly restored once the hidden data is extracted, a property critical in medical imaging and legal forensics where any alteration is unacceptable. Active research is now exploring how deep learning can learn richer, more adaptive embedding strategies, and how robust hashing can anchor image authentication in a world where generative models make convincing forgeries increasingly easy to produce.
